I have been a professional clinical counsellor for over 10 years. People usually come in to see me when they’re in distress or feeling stuck. I create a safe space for you to talk about what you’re going through. The goal of our work together is generally for you to start to think and feel differently so you can make whatever changes you want to make in your life.

In the first session, I listen closely to your story and concerns, help you see things from a broader perspective, and make a few suggestions on actions you can take immediately to improve your situation.

Therapy is a collaboration. Two people trying to understand and resolve one person’s issues. Clients know themselves well and speak intelligently about themselves. But they can’t always fully see or explain themselves or their behavior. And they usually don’t recognize all the options available to them. When a client and I talk thoughtfully, compassionately, and non-judgmentally about his or her life, new perspectives and possibilities emerge.

I help you gain insight into:

  • Inner resources not presently being used
  • Recurring self-destructive behaviour
  • Self-limiting assumptions
  • Emotional reactions in the moment that inhibit constructive action
  • Behaviour that undermines healthy relations with others
  • How present behavior and beliefs fit into your larger life history

I help you develop and implement:

  • Plans for challenging situations (e.g., a family dinner or a conversation with a boss)
  • Coping strategies for stressful or triggering situations
  • Maintenance plans, so your change is sustainable and adaptive
  • General wellness plans

I am mindful that every person is different. So I try to customize treatment according to where you’re at, collaborating with you as much as possible. Having said that, I hope you will accept my occasional constructive challenge to your way of being. As your therapist, I think of myself as an ally or representative of your better self—the rational and loving part of you that brought you into counselling in the first place.

I am often asked by friends and clients if my work is depressing: “Don’t you get tired of hearing the same sad stories over and over again?” I always say, “No, the work is hopeful.” Yes, clients are suffering and usually they come in because they’re stuck doing the same thing over and over again. But once they’re engaged in therapy they’re making progress: thinking more clearly, feeling better, and making practical changes. Therapy is hopeful and often transformative.
